The Dodge Durango: The Powerful Family SUV

When considering a vehicle for their family, most people don't factor power into the decision, but if you are choosing the Dodge Durango, it'll be on your mind. Even if you didn't mean to choose it for the power it brings, you'll quickly notice (and appreciate) it.

SUVs started as big and bold monstrosities that might not have been so comfortable to ride in, but soon they transitioned to comfortably support families. Changing platforms gave a smoother ride, more innovative technology provided entertainment, and toned-back designs made them more appealing to a wider audience. While the Durango followed some of these trends, it certainly did not follow them all, giving you a unique experience that no other vehicle can give.

It's Certainly a Dodge

Would you expect the maker of the Charger and Challenger to leave you wanting more in terms of power? The Dodge Durango offers several engine options, each more powerful than the previous. In the SXT, GT, and Citadel you'll find a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. This is a good choice as a commuting engine because it gives you the best fuel economy of the choices.

An optional engine for the Citadel and the standard on the Durango R/T is a 5.7-liter V8 that can make 360 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. This can be considered their moderate performance engine, packing a lot of sport features if you choose the Durango R/T, including an upgraded steering system, sport-tuned suspension, and unique designs on the interior and body. When you want a true experience while you are on the road, the next engine might be for you.

The final engine option for the Durango comes on the Durango SRT. Just by seeing the SRT distinction you should know that this will be an impressive model. 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque from a 6.4-liter V8 engine offers a 4.4-second time to get from zero to sixty MPH. Whereas other Durango options only offer All-Wheel Drive as an option, the Durango SRT comes with it standard, allowing you to get the best control of this behemoth. Don't be scared with the size and power of this vehicle, by buying one you are also getting a driving lesson at the SRT Track Experience at Bondurant Racing School in Arizona.

Holding onto a Bold Design

As mentioned, the Durango didn't fully conform when all of the other SUVs did. Being the tallest and longest vehicle in its class, you can expect the Durango to embrace these measurements. Its size allows it to be a three-row SUV without cramping passengers into little seats, or to help you fit all of the gear that you need for the adventure ahead. The bold design holds onto the idea that SUVs of the past had: powerful and bulky. While this might be a drawback for many customers, it is unique in that no other SUV models have continued to hold onto this traditional design.

Just because the design is traditional doesn't mean it lacks in options; you can choose between several exterior packages to make the Durango look how you want it to. Some of these options include Blacktop, Brass Monkey, SRT performance design, and exclusive color options to make you feel confident when you are on the road in your Durango.

An Interior to Impress

An SUV without an impressive interior is lackluster, but that isn't something you'll need to worry about in your Durango. With an array of standard features, and a variety of seating options, every passenger will be comfortable for the duration of the ride. Some of the features include a three-zone climate system, configurable rear seats, and more, with more advanced features on upgraded trims.

The seven-seat configuration is standard on the Durango, arranged in a 2-3-2 formation. If you find that you don't use all of the seats - or if your children are growing very quickly - you can replace the bench with Captain's Chairs on some trims. If six seats is still too many, you can get the Durango SXT without that back row, giving you room for five passengers and a lot of cargo.

The Durango offers 17 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, and 48 cubic feet behind the second row. If both of these rows are folded down, you are looking at 85 cubic feet for loading whatever you might need. With only one other vehicle in the class that can put up a number like that, you'll know you are choosing one of the best options.

Safety Features

While many of the most advanced features are available in the Durango, only a few come as standard. You can get a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, and some other basic features on models like the GT and Citadel, but you'll need to choose a package option for the most innovative features.

The Technology Package includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a forward collision warning system with automatic braking, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist.

The Safety/Security and Convenience Group Package gives you blind-spot monitoring as standard.

Putting it All Together

Many people might think that the Durango is too bold, but that just means it isn't for you. There are many drivers that are looking for the most powerful and fun option to carry their family and gear, and the Durango is geared towards those drivers. Being able to have a zero-to-sixty time that rivals some sports cars, but still being able to fit up to seven passengers, the Durango certainly offers a little bit for everyone.
